In July … Deep in Joy’s Excess

In July … Deep in Joy’s Excess

“Why do I make no poems? Good, my friend/ Now is there silence through the summer woods/ … And I—I am too Deep in joy’s excess for the imperfect impulse of a song.” (In July by Edward Dowden)

"We go in withering July/ To ply the hard incessant hoe;
Panting beneath the brazen sky/ We sweat and grumble, but we go."
(Ruth Pitter, The Diehards)

“Everyone's feeling pretty, it's hotter than July.
Though the world's full of problems, they couldn't touch us even if they tried.
From the park I hear rhythms, Marley's hot on the box.
Tonight there will be a party on the corner at the end of the block.” (Master Blaster, by Stevie Wonder)

Dear Family, Friends and Music Lovers,

We had a great show at Mighty Fine Guitars last month, June 27th, assisted by the excellent bass playing of Karl Hartmann, and raised money, “a nice chunk of change,” to support the work of Mom HenFAR-West (Folk Alliance Region-West), the Larman Scholarship and Venue Sponsorship.

This Monday July 6th, Dave will be a reading his poems including some from his new chapbook, “I Heard the Mountain’s Voice Singing,” at Rivertown Poets AMuseingMondays event. He will be performing with fellow poet Gary Turchin and jazz musician, Chuck Sher, at the Aqus Café, 189 H Street, Petaluma, on Monday July 6th at 6:30 pm. The hostess, Sande Anfang, wrote, “I'm quite excited about it. You and Gary will be followed by a CD release party. My friend, Chuck Sher, produced a CD … very high quality with beautiful music and poetry. It should be quite a fine evening!” Please visit and like them on Facebook.

Chappell and Dave will be the featured singers at Unity Church, 1871 Geary Street, Walnut Creek, 925-937-2191, on Sunday July 12, backed up by their house band, Fusion. Come on out for some good singing with the congregation, an uplifting message, and a fine meditation experience.

We have been looking forward to seeing our Los Angeles friends at the Coffee Gallery Backstage with Severin Browne, Thursday, July 16th at 8pm, $20 at the door: The Coffee Gallery Backstage Presents Chappell & Dave Holt and Severin Browne. Thanks to our buddy Tom Hubbard, who invited us to participate in the open mic at the Guitar Merchant in Canoga Park on Wed. July 15th.  Hope to see you all there!

We will celebrate the work of Bread & Roses this month at their Annual Volunteer Thank You Celebration, a great opportunity not only to applaud and cheer the hard-working staff, but also to hang out and even play with other musicians who’ve donated their time and talents to the organization.

We’re still charting! On KC Café Radio, you may request up to 2 songs per hour, no more than 10 songs per day. If an artist you request has already played within the last two hours, your request will not be honored, and will appear in the search results with a Song not requestable icon icon. Click the “request” button associated with the selection you would like to hear. Your selection should then play sometime over the course of the next hour. You can also listen to Kathy Forste’s great interview of us here.

Many thanks to Dan of Radio Crystal Blue for including “Bad Girls Blues,” from our album Stone & Fire on his radio show in June. You can visit Dan’s archive here.
