December Is Here Before It’s June … My Goodness How the Time Has Flewn

December Is Here Before It’s June … My Goodness How the Time Has Flewn

“How did it get so late so soon?
Its night before its afternoon.
December is here before its June.
My goodness how the time has flewn.
How did it get so late so soon?” -  Dr. Seuss

“Oh, what a night, late December back in ’63,
What a very special time for me. As I remember, what a night!”
(Bob Gaudio [of the Four Seasons], and Judy Parker)

“Let Me Sit Down With the Ones I Love Best,” Happy Thanksgiving!

“Let Me Sit Down With the Ones I Love Best,”
Happy Thanksgiving!

“No shadow, no stars, no moon, no cars. November, it only believes in a pile of dead leaves and a moon that’s the color of bone.” - November by Tom Waits

“Give me the end of the year an’ its fun
When most of the plannin’ an’ toilin’ is done;
Bring all the wanderers home to the nest,
Let me sit down with the ones I love best,
Hear the old voices still ringin’ with song,
See the old faces unblemished by wrong,
See the old table with all of its chairs
An’ I'll put soul in my Thanksgivin’ prayers.”
-  Edgar A. Guest, Thanksgiving

Hi Family and Friends,

We had a really wonderful productive time at the2015 FAR-West music conference, a high energy time sharing the love and camaraderie that flows through the hotel hallways when the FAR-West community meets (Networking Center photo courtesy of Jeanette Lundgren). May it flow out into the world! We’re hoping to make it to next year’s conference 2016 in Seattle.

Chappell & Dave will be the featured singers at Unity of Walnut Creek, this Sunday, November 8th, backed up by the house band, Fusion. The services feature special musical guests, like Chappell & Dave Holt, every Sunday who bring a unique voice every time, drawing on many varied styles of praise and worshipful music. This time, they bring the jazzy side of spiritual Americana to the Unity service. Come on out for some good singing with the congregation, and a good church experience. You can also watch online here. Here’s Mahalia Jackson singing “I’m Gonna Live the Life I sing About in My Song,” one we will feature on Sunday.

Another great collaboration this month, Chappell & Dave Holt with harpist/violinist Carlos Reyes at The Monkey House, 1638 University Ave., Berkeley, CA. Don’t miss this rare show, a chance to see a Carlos ground breaking harp performance up close. Reserve Seats by emailing seats@themonkeyhouse.org

Sunday, November 22, 2015, 7 – 9 pm, we’ll be performing at Murphy’s Irish Pub, 464 1st St. E., Sonoma, CA. Concord Song Circle leader, Bob Loomis, (see pic) will join us on this one playing flute, and harmonica. No Cover.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye, Christmas is around the corner! Holiday Special! Order both our CDs,Stone & Fire, and Wings of the Morning, directly for $22 (includes shipping). Make your check payable to Dave Holt and send it to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. You can also purchase downloads at CD Baby (Wings of the Morning) and Stone & Fire .

The Stillness of October Gold …

The Stillness of October Gold …

"The stillness of October gold
Went out like beauty from a face."
-   E. A. Robinson

“Today my bird flew away, gone to find her big blue jay. Starlight before she took flight, I sung a Lullaby of Birdland every night, sang for my Ava every night. Ava was the morning, now she’s gone. She’s reborn like Sarah Vaughn.” (October Song, by Amy Winehouse)

Hi Family, Friends and Neighbors,

We’ll be at FAR-West this month. You’ll find us showcasing in many PGS rooms, hanging in the Networking Center, volunteering, and we’ll have “merch” in the raffle. We hope to see many of you there. Folk Alliance Region-West (FAR-West) is being held in Oakland, California, this year, at the Marriott City Center on October 15th -18th. Evening concerts are open to the public. The Venue’s Choice concert on Thursday begins at 7 pm. Public Tickets are $15. either at the door or via Brown Paper Tickets in advance.

In about a week, Chappell will be interviewed for Artist's Connection, a locally produced (Davis, CA) monthly television series hosted by the renowned SF Chronicle journalist, and singer-songwriter, Kevin Fagan. By coincidence, Chappell’s old friend, Hugh Shacklett, is being interviewed the same day. Chappell and Hugh both played The Painted House in the old days in Santa Rosa.

Artist’s Connection features topic-driven interviews of artists with questions that go beyond persona and performance, revealing the reasons behind the choices the artists make, and gives viewers a glimpse through the eyes of the artist. Artist's Connection is produced by Sam Hawk and Pieter Pastoor at Davis Media Access.

Dave will be playing at Unity Center of Walnut Creek with Sonny Fairley, jazz sax player and flautist, and his band, Fusion. Sonny will be the featured special performer this Sunday October 4. Come by for some high quality church and smokin’ jazz/R & B tunes.

After FAR-West, we’re going up to Pioneer to visit our friends Kat Everitt and Denny McCue. They have a radio show on KQBM 90.7 FM and kqmb.org that supports many Americana artists including Hugh Shacklett, and Chappell and Dave Holt.

In November, we will perform with violinist extraordinaire, Carlos Reyes, at the Monkey House, 1638 University Ave., in Berkeley. That’s Saturday, November 14th. Mark your calendars for a great show in a cozy and comfy space! Ira Marlowe, the room’s gracious host, is also a talented songwriter and he’ll open the show with his wonderful songs.

Chappell and Dave Holt are still charting on the Americana Country and California charts. If you’d like to order our new CD, Stone & Fire, directly please send a $17 check (includes $2 shipping) payable to Dave Holt to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. You can also purchase downloads at CD Baby: Wings of the Morning and Stone & Fire.

Smiling Gently As I Near September

Smiling Gently As I Near September

“As a man who has never paused at wishing wells
Now I'm watching children's carousels
And their laughter's music to my ears
And I find that I'm smiling gently as I near
September, the warm September of my years.” (Frank Sinatra)

“It was the third of September, that day I’ll always remember, yes I will, ‘cause that was the day that my daddy died … Momma, I’m depending on you to tell me the truth.”  (Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Temptations)

Dear Friends,

It’s been a good summer, old friends visiting from far away. One of my earliest bandmates, Uldis Fogels, a songwriter who wrote such fine lines as “I started out, same as anyone, with my hands in my pockets and my eyes on the sun,” came to visit. He flew down from Barry, Ontario, Canada, and we had a great time catching up with several old friends. Uldis lived in Camp Meeker, Sonoma County, for a number of years (see picture of the old US Post Office, now replaced), so we had a “coming home” party for him.

Chappell raised the roof at Unity Center of Walnut Creek on Sunday, September 6th, with her beautiful original song, “Wind in the Oak,” [from our CD, Wings of the Morning] and a swinging revival of the Jon Hendricks, Cannonball Adderley song “Sermonette.”  Dave got ‘em rockin’ too with Stevie Wonder’s “Have a Talk With God.” It was great to do these tunes with a drummer, Larry Curtin. See pic of Dave seated at their beautiful grand piano.

At the Cannery Café, Hayward, Thursday Night Flight takes off in more ways than one! Coming up on Thursday, Sept 17th, will be a pairing of duos, pianos, and chanteuses, Chappell & Dave Holt and Flying Salvias. Doors open 5:30 pm (Music from 6-8pm).  Online Member Tickets: $10. / Online Non-Member: $12. At the Door: $15. Ticket price includes Access to the Museum exhibits, live music, beer & wine, specials and light snacks with limited cafe menu available.
Advance Tickets at Brown Paper Tickets.

We will also be part of a music and poetry review hosted by David Erdreich at Avonova, Saturday, September 12, 8:00 PM.

If you’d like to order our new CD, Stone & Fire, directly please send a $17 check (includes $2 shipping) payable to Dave Holt to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. August … the Wish For Water

August … the Wish For Water

“… the meagerness of summer, the dry
twisted shapes of black elm,
scrub oak, and chaparral, a landscape
August has already drained of green …
the empty sky, the wish for water.” (California Hills in August, Dana Gioia)

“I'm as corny as Kansas in August,
I'm as normal as blueberry pie.
No more a smart little girl with no heart,
I have found me a wonderful guy!” (Rodgers & Hammerstein, fr. South Pacific)

That is our wish on the West Coast this season, to hear the flow of creeks and rivers, the splash of puddles. Speaking of rain, we were drenched a bit in the downpour that hit Los Angeles the Saturday we left to drive back to the Bay Area. A bit of the Mexican hurricane came up and whacked the city with a rain storm on July 18. Unfortunately one of the outdoor shows our friends were playing got rained out.

We totally enjoyed our gigs down south, and the chance to visit with folks. It was great to see Shelley Ross, Ed Pearl and Jeff Landau among many others at our Coffee Gallery gig. Steve Strickland shared his wonderful photos (see the one of Shelley meeting Ed).  The freeways may be full of madness and collisions, but the musicians continue to fill the air with beauty and song.

Tuesday, August 4th at 7pm, Dave will be reading from his new poetry book, “I Heard the Mountain’s Voice Singing,” at the Apple Box Café, in Petaluma as part of the Marin Poetry Center Traveling Show hosted by Mark Meierding, and featuring poets Dave Holt, Sy Margaret Baldwin, Jodi L Hottel, Bonnie Long, and Phyllis Meshulam. Address: 224 B Street, Petaluma CA 94952, Phone: 707-762-5222.

We’ve included the group photo taken at theBread & Roses volunteers gathering. Many of us had the opportunity to hear each other’s music at the three or four stages placed around the property. We enjoyed hearing Maurice Tani’s soulful songs for the first time. Much fun!

If you’d like to order our new CD, Stone & Fire, directly please send a $17 check (includes $2 shipping) payable to Dave Holt to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. Use the links on each CD title to purchase downloads of Wings of the Morning and Stone & Fire. Please review our CDs at Amazon and iTunes if your are able to. Here’s the Amazon link.

In July … Deep in Joy’s Excess

In July … Deep in Joy’s Excess

“Why do I make no poems? Good, my friend/ Now is there silence through the summer woods/ … And I—I am too Deep in joy’s excess for the imperfect impulse of a song.” (In July by Edward Dowden)

"We go in withering July/ To ply the hard incessant hoe;
Panting beneath the brazen sky/ We sweat and grumble, but we go."
(Ruth Pitter, The Diehards)

“Everyone's feeling pretty, it's hotter than July.
Though the world's full of problems, they couldn't touch us even if they tried.
From the park I hear rhythms, Marley's hot on the box.
Tonight there will be a party on the corner at the end of the block.” (Master Blaster, by Stevie Wonder)

Dear Family, Friends and Music Lovers,

We had a great show at Mighty Fine Guitars last month, June 27th, assisted by the excellent bass playing of Karl Hartmann, and raised money, “a nice chunk of change,” to support the work of Mom HenFAR-West (Folk Alliance Region-West), the Larman Scholarship and Venue Sponsorship.

This Monday July 6th, Dave will be a reading his poems including some from his new chapbook, “I Heard the Mountain’s Voice Singing,” at Rivertown Poets AMuseingMondays event. He will be performing with fellow poet Gary Turchin and jazz musician, Chuck Sher, at the Aqus Café, 189 H Street, Petaluma, on Monday July 6th at 6:30 pm. The hostess, Sande Anfang, wrote, “I'm quite excited about it. You and Gary will be followed by a CD release party. My friend, Chuck Sher, produced a CD … very high quality with beautiful music and poetry. It should be quite a fine evening!” Please visit and like them on Facebook.

Chappell and Dave will be the featured singers at Unity Church, 1871 Geary Street, Walnut Creek, 925-937-2191, on Sunday July 12, backed up by their house band, Fusion. Come on out for some good singing with the congregation, an uplifting message, and a fine meditation experience.

We have been looking forward to seeing our Los Angeles friends at the Coffee Gallery Backstage with Severin Browne, Thursday, July 16th at 8pm, $20 at the door: The Coffee Gallery Backstage Presents Chappell & Dave Holt and Severin Browne. Limited Seating so please call to reserve your seats or to get information: (626) 798-6236 and you can pay at the door! Thanks to our buddy Tom Hubbard, who invited us to participate in the open mic at the Guitar Merchant in Canoga Park on Wed. July 15th.  Hope to see you all there!

We will celebrate the work of Bread & Roses this month at their Annual Volunteer Thank You Celebration, a great opportunity not only to applaud and cheer the hard-working staff, but also to hang out and even play with other musicians who’ve donated their time and talents to the organization.

We’re still charting! On KC Café Radio, you may request up to 2 songs per hour, no more than 10 songs per day. If an artist you request has already played within the last two hours, your request will not be honored, and will appear in the search results with a Song not requestable icon icon. Click the “request” button associated with the selection you would like to hear. Your selection should then play sometime over the course of the next hour. You can also listen to Kathy Forste’s great interview of us here.

Many thanks to Dan of Radio Crystal Blue for including “Bad Girls Blues,” from our album Stone & Fire on his radio show in June. You can visit Dan’s archive here.

If you’d like to order our new CD, Stone & Fire, directly please send a $17 check (includes $2 shipping) payable to Dave Holt to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. June, When All of God’s Own Wildflowers Bloom …

June, When All of God’s Own Wildflowers Bloom …

“It’s beautiful the Summer month of June
When all of God’s own wildflowers are in bloom
And sun shines brightly most part of the day
And butterflies o’er lush green meadows play.” (Francis Duggan, June)

“Since the return from her stay on the moon,
she listens like spring and she talks like June, hey, hey.”
(Drops of Jupiter, by Train)

For Thy Delight Each May-Morning …

For Thy Delight Each May-Morning …

The Shepherds’ Swains shall dance and sing
For thy delight each May-morning:
If these delights thy mind may move,
Then live with me, and be my love.
(The Passionate Shepherd to His Love, Christopher Marlowe)

“One morning in May, oh, the rapture,
tonight darling, I pray to recapture
just one hour, just one flower
from love’s faded bouquet.” (Hoagy Carmichael, Mitchell Parish)

The Sweetness of an April Day …

The Sweetness of an April Day …

“I never knew the charm of spring,
I never met it face to face;
I never knew my heart could sing,
never missed a warm embrace
‘Till April in Paris” (1933, by Vernon Duke, “Yip” Harburg)

Ah, I have wandered with unwearied feet,
All the long sweetness of an April day,
Lulled with cool murmurs and the drowsy beat
Of partridge wings in secret thickets gray,
The marriage hymns of all the birds at play,
The faces of sweet flowers, and easeful dreams
Beside slow reaches of frog-haunted streams … (April by Archibald Lampman, Canadian poet)

Dear Friends,

We had a great tour in March to Southern California with John Roy Zat. Our first stop was Last Stage West in Atascadero, where we shared songs with Dulcie Taylor and Banjer Dan, Dan Mazer. We drove to Los Angeles and played in North Hollywood, opening as guests of Severin Browne at Kulak’s Woodshed. You can see the videos on our YouTube site. We had more music fun at Matt Denny’s Ale House with J. C. Hyke, We are grateful to so many of our LA friends who came out to support us.

On Sunday, April 12th at 4:00pm, we will be part of a Seasons of Blessing Concert at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 149 Manzanita Ave., in San Carlos, 94070; phone 650-593-0325. We will join liturgical musician and educator, Steve Eulberg, several time winner of the Mountain Dulcimer and Hammered Dulcimer contests. This is the second concert in his series.

Coming to Oakland, to a location near you! We will perform with Carlos Reyes at Avonova Music, 417 Avon St., Oakland, CA, 94618 on Saturday, April 18th, at 8pm. Doors open at 7:15pm, tickets are $20. This is a great space for music. Please come on by and enjoy! Chappell’s brother, Tom Ekkens, will be our guest, reprising his harmonica performance from our CD Stone & Fire. You can advance purchase tickets and RSVP here.

In May we will be traveling north to play Cabin Tavern, Bellingham; Soulfood Coffee House, Redmond; and Egan’s Ballard Jam House in Seattle. We hope to see our Pacific Northwest friends and new fans at these shows. More details later. We are still booking Oregon—any suggestions?

On KC Café Radio, you may request up to 2 songs per hour, no more than 10 songs per day. If an artist you request has already played within the last two hours, your request will not be honored, and will appear in the search results with a Song not requestable icon icon. Click the “request” button associated with the selection you would like to hear. Your selection should then play sometime over the course of the next hour.

Take the Winds of March With Beauty …

Take the Winds of March With Beauty …

"Daffodils that come before the swallow dares, and take
The winds of March with beauty."
-  William Shakespeare, The Winter’s Tale

“You are my child. You came like the winds of March with all the love in your eyes,
You are my child. You came like the morning lights.” (Winds of March, Journey)

Dear Friends,

We invited our friend John Roy Zat to join us on a weeklong tour to Southern California. He was free and said yes! We’re calling it the 3-in-1 tour, three songwriters who will back each other up with guitar, piano, fiddle, and autoharp. Please join us in person or streaming online. Pop some corn, put on your pj’s, sit back, and enjoy some great music!

Thursday, March 5th at 6 pm PST: Chappell & Dave Holt with John Roy Zat at Last Stage West BBQ in Atascadero, CA. This show will also be live-streamed at http://www.laststagewest.net/livevideo.html with Dan Mazer aka BanjerDan. Grammy nominee, Dulcie Taylor will join us too.

Friday, March 6th at 8pm PST: Chappell & Dave Holt with John Roy Zat will open the show at Severin Browne's First Friday at Kulak's Woodshed in North Hollywood, CA. You can also watch the Live ‪‎Webcast‬ at www.kulakswoodshed.com and email us during the show!

Please put Saturday, April 18th, on your calendar for a special event, a house concert featuring Chappell & Dave Holt and Carlos Reyes, award-winning Paraguayan harpist/violinist, at Avonova, 417 Avon St., Oakland.

The music of Chappell & Dave Holt is featured on KC Cafe Radio … You can listen to the free sample right away and thanks to KC Cafe radio staff, it is very cool, if I do say so myself! We’ll be doing an interview on the station soon. You may request up to 2 songs per hour, no more than 10 songs per day. If your request has already played within the last two hours, it will not be honored, and will appear in the search results with a C:\Users\Debassige.HOLT-PC\Pictures\Music Pics Folder\icon.jpg icon. Click the “request” button associated with the selection you would like to hear. Your selection should then play sometime over the course of the next hour. Timeliness may be affected by the number of requests waiting to be played, special programming scheduled to air, or other factors relating to the regular rotation of music playing at the time.

If you’d like to order our new CD, Stone & Fire, directly please send a $17 check (includes $2 shipping) payable to Dave Holt to 1335 Kenwal Rd., #A, Concord, CA 94521. You can also purchase downloads of Stone & Fire at CD Baby. Also our first CD,Wings of the Morning, which includes some of our true jazz tunes along with “the jazzier side of Americana” songs is now fully loaded on their site.
