Smiling Gently As I Near September

Smiling Gently As I Near September

“As a man who has never paused at wishing wells
Now I'm watching children's carousels
And their laughter's music to my ears
And I find that I'm smiling gently as I near
September, the warm September of my years.” (Frank Sinatra)

“It was the third of September, that day I’ll always remember, yes I will, ‘cause that was the day that my daddy died … Momma, I’m depending on you to tell me the truth.”  (Papa Was a Rolling Stone, Temptations)

Dear Friends,

It’s been a good summer, old friends visiting from far away. One of my earliest bandmates, Uldis Fogels, a songwriter who wrote such fine lines as “I started out, same as anyone, with my hands in my pockets and my eyes on the sun,” came to visit. He flew down from Barry, Ontario, Canada, and we had a great time catching up with several old friends. Uldis lived in Camp Meeker, Sonoma County, for a number of years (see picture of the old US Post Office, now replaced), so we had a “coming home” party for him.

Chappell raised the roof at Unity Center of Walnut Creek on Sunday, September 6th, with her beautiful original song, “Wind in the Oak,” [from our CD, Wings of the Morning] and a swinging revival of the Jon Hendricks, Cannonball Adderley song “Sermonette.”  Dave got ‘em rockin’ too with Stevie Wonder’s “Have a Talk With God.” It was great to do these tunes with a drummer, Larry Curtin. See pic of Dave seated at their beautiful grand piano.
